Since the unveiling of the Senna, it has gained immense popularity and is considered by many as the coolest McLaren. And for good reason. Its timeless and incredibly unique design, along with its technical features, propel this vehicle to a new level.
What many may not know is that McLaren is a relatively young brand in the street-legal market. It has only been 30 years since McLaren introduced the F1, its first street-legal vehicle. The F1 marked a significant turning point in McLaren's history, ushering in a fascinating era, especially in the realm of hypercars. The F1 gained incredible popularity and is now, thirty years later, hailed as the undisputed hypercar legend. The McLaren F1 cost approximately 1.5 million DM at the time (adjusted for inflation in 2023, this is roughly 1.3 million euros), making it the world's most expensive car at that time.
Following the F1, McLaren immediately embarked on the development of the next hypercar, the legendary P1. It was only introduced in 2013 and was also an impressive hypercar. Five years later, McLaren introduced the next hypercar, bearing the name of the world-renowned racer Ayrton Senna. The Senna is an extremely powerful hypercar with a 4.0-liter V8 engine and two turbochargers. It boasts an impressive 800 PS (588 kW) of power with a torque of 800 Nm. McLaren placed a strong emphasis on weight reduction in the development of the Senna. The chassis is made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, and many parts of the vehicle are crafted from lightweight materials.
The curb weight is only about 1,198 kg, leading to an impressive power-to-weight ratio. The aerodynamics of the Senna are designed for maximum performance, and an active aerodynamic system, including a retractable front wing and a large rear wing, helps maximize downforce and enhance stability at high speeds. The Senna can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 2.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of over 330 km/h. The production of the McLaren Senna was limited to 500 units, and all were sold out before the official unveiling. The Senna's suspension is specifically designed for maximum performance and offers various adjustment options for different driving conditions.
The braking system uses carbon-ceramic brake discs to handle the high speed of the vehicle. The interior of the Senna is minimalist and focused on driver engagement. Lightweight seats and a free-standing steering wheel contribute to the sporty orientation of the vehicle. The McLaren Senna is a high-end vehicle with a correspondingly high price. When new, it cost 993,000 euros at the time.
