Everything was better in the past... That is an argument we always hear from the "older" generation. There is an argument to be made for the raw (non-digital) exotic cars of the 80's and 90's. No hybrid technology or full electric engines, no launch control, just raw engine and chassis performance without the use of electronic sensors. A 2018 Porsche 918 doesn't require the skills, that you need to drive this amazing 911 GT1.
The 911 GT1 Straßenversion, or street version was built so that Porsche could compete in the GT1 Class racing. The GT1 was based on the 993 body shell, but with modified exterior panels and a substantial roll-cage that also supported the engine, gearbox and suspension. This helped Porsche avoid necessary crash testing and reinforced ties to the production cars. But in almost every way, the GT1 was purpose-built race car. It had a carbon fiber body, full width wing, a tiny cockpit and a maximum power of 600bhp was developed at 7,200rpm. The GT1 had a top speed of 205 mp/h or 330 km/h.
Today the car is a collector's item and prices have exploded from $600,000 in 2003 to almost $6 million in 2017!
